Algebra was bombed in high school. The new study mode for Chatgpt is my redemption arc
Welcome to Eye on AI. Artificial intelligence correspondent Sharon Goldman here in the newsletter on Thursday! In this edition ...
This week, I got a peek on the new study mode from Chatgpt during the Openai Press show on Zoom, before it was released on Tuesday.
Switching the tool button in the chat “Ask anything” to “study and learning” transforms Chatgpt from the assistant questions and answers directly to a personal teacher. Instead of simply spawning the answers, it uses the socket interrogation, hints, and step -by -step guidance to encourage active learning. Tell her what you want to study, you will evaluate your skills level and even remember your progress through chats.
While I watched the illustration, my eyes widened and my breath accelerated. The study status may be designed with the status of university students in mind – which is manufactured through the system instructions made from inputs of teachers, scientists and learning experts. But although several decades have passed since my academic experience, I knew immediately that I wanted to use the study status. I knew exactly what I wanted to use for: Algebra in high school.
The failure of mathematics in my life
Along with the rest of the mathematics curriculum in those years, I was completely bombed in algebra – and I cannot exaggerate the amount of failure that formed my life. I have a deep sense of shame about how difficult it is mathematics for me, even with teachers. He stood in a blatant contradiction with how easy I was out of topics such as English and social studies, and I felt that no one really understood the extent of my curiosity to mathematics. There were many questions that were not answered. What is algebra, however? Why do we learn it in the first place? Why comes before engineering and triangles? What is the purpose of all these rules about X and Y?
It might seem ridiculous, given that I am now writing about artificial intelligence and regularly researchers with a doctorate in mathematics who refer to the linear algebra in the conversation. But I always hoped that I could get what is in high school mathematics.
Yes, there are real concerns about how artificial intelligence affects students’ learning-from cheating and excessive dependence on privacy and bias. New reports this week from The rest of the world I found that when students in the rural Colombia managed to reach artificial intelligence, students began failure.
But for me, the new study mode of Chatgpt has become a deep personal thing: the long arc of long salvation.
Study mode in Teriti
I started where I couldn’t really before, and the study status was immediately a refreshing response:
“Let’s deal with this like the first day of algebra 1 – only better. This time, questions must be asked whenever you want, and move in your pace.”
I was on board: What He is Algebra, I asked.
Algebra is part of mathematics where we stop working only with numbers and start working with relationships between numbers.
Instead of the question:
What is 3 x 5?
We ask:
What is the number X that will make this equation correct?
It is like mathematics with mystery – something hidden, and our job is its solution.
“Mathematics with mystery” – oh, I liked it. After giving me a decrease in “big ideas” in algebra – everything from resolving equations to graphic lines and word problems, the study status provided some options:
Want:
A) Asking questions about any of this?
B) Choose the type of puzzle to start?
C) Continue with the introduction and build slowly from here?
Your call!
I said I would like to solve equations. Study status is the right to:
🔍 Solve Equations: What is the goal?
The equation is similar to the balance scale – whatever you do to one side, you have to do for the other.
Here is the first equation:
3x + 4 = 19
👉 What do you think we should do first to start a solution x?
(Just take a guess – we will discover it together.)
The promise of personal learning that works for Amnesty International
I sat and smiled. Apparently, it has not been too late to solve X – even for a journalist who always believed it was good with words but terrible with numbers. I spent a few hours to advance through equations from one step and two steps; Equations with variables on both sides; Equations with brackets; And equations combine terms. I asked a lot of questions along the way and sometimes overcoming my responses with “Wow!” And “I never knew that!”
Like every case of using artificial intelligence, there are differentials. The risks of excessive dependence on artificial intelligence and decreasing critical thinking are real. But I find myself tending to the point of view of my colleague Jeremy was, who, in his last book Artificial Intelligence Master: The Manual of Survival for our Great FutureThe promise is highlighted with personal learning that works with i.e.. It frames the idea of artificial intelligence as an individual teacher as one of his most powerful educational opportunities.
My late return to algebra may not be the use of the targeted Openai. But who knows – perhaps I will reach a differentiation and integration account.
However, here are the rest of the news of artificial intelligence.

Microsoft records the artificial intelligence symbol of the European Union, but Meta has decreased. Microsoft Declare On Thursday, I signed the AI Practices Blog for the General Union of the European Union-its sits one of the first major technology companies to do so. This step indicates Microsoft’s support for AI’s governance in the European Union, even when it calls for simplifying what it describes as a complex list. Other companies have also expressed their willingness to comply with the volunteer code, including Openai and Mistral, but there are still noticeable comments: Meta refused to join, and Google has not yet shown.

The elbow – which was planned for Narvik and supported by Norwegian partners NSCALE and Aker – will be presented up to 230 MB of AI’s ability at an account, with plans to expand the range of 100,000 NVIDIA graphics units by 2026. Artificial intelligence researchers are close to the labor market, such as the American Professional League stars. the New York Times He has a great story today about the wars of talent artificial intelligence, in which the race to employ senior researchers from young artificial intelligence has become intense and profitable-the signing of the American Professional League stars, with companies such as Meta, Openai, Google and Microsoft provides compensation packages nine numbers and participate in high-support employment. Many of these “free agents of artificial intelligence” resort to informal agents and informal paper for frenzy and negotiating the best deals, not bound by salary caps such as those in professional sport. I took the competition even the tone of a sports scene, with broadcasting outlets such as TBPN covering changes in the prominent industry with the taste of the deadline for the league trade.

Eye on artificial intelligence numbers
52 %
This is the number of developers who are not yet used for the artificial intelligence agent, according to a new survey of Stack Overflow software, a common question and answers platform for computer programmers and developers. The study found that artificial intelligence factors are not yet prevalent: the majority of developers (52 %) either do not use agents or stick to the most simple artificial intelligence tools, and that an important part (38 %) do not have plans to adopt.
