Callum Smith Vs. David Morrell: Is this the fighting that Smith is afraid to take?
Callum Smith must soon decide whether he is going to agree with the WBO mandate to protect his temporary lightweight heavyweight title against the #2 competitor, David Morrell, or choose to leave the belt.
Mandate Morrell Smith: Duck or Fighting?
If Smith (31-2, 22 Kos) surrenders the title to avoid the dangerous battle against Morrell (12-1, 9 Kos), he would lose his golden ticket to get a lucrative battle against the winner of the Dmitry Bivol Bivol vs Artur Beterbiev 3 trilogy.
Some fans believe that if Callum leaves the WBO to deviate Morrell, will sit and wait For the winner of that fight, hoping they will look in its direction. It’s a weak way to get the money-changing money from conflict against the Bivol-meterbiev III, but beats having to work on the spot by going through the talented Cuban Morrell.
There would be no other way of looking at movement like that except labeling it as an old-fashioned fear, grab Smith at the back, causing him to avoid Morrell. Smith would hope that fighting Bivol or Beterbiev will fall from the sky to allow him to get the Mega-Million fight passively without having to touch the young Morrell, 27, and possibly be beaten.
The WBO commanded Callum to defend his 175 lbs temporary title against David Morrell. Their management has until August 20th, 2025, from July 21, 2025, to share a deal before a purse proposal is ordered.
Smith vs Morrell: Spinal or Help?
It is understandable why the WBO has decided to order a Smith-Morrell Fight. They said themselves what their logic is for ordering the battle, saying it “In order to promote the active detention of the department” While Bivol-Beterbiev enters her trilogy. The WBO wants his 175-weight interim title holder (Smith) to be active, not just sit and wait for his fight that was hoped for against the winner.
Smith’s bid for a compulsory shot against WBO Bivol champion has already been rejected. As such, Callum cannot sit on his back, waiting about a year for his eventual title shot. He must defend his WBO title against Morrell or put it up to the young, hungry go-getter.
If Smith wants to stay in line, he must show some spine and face Morrell. If he is afraid to fight Cuban, he will have to give up his place holder for the Mega-Millions title shot.
