Xander Zayas is back on the island in Puerto Rico, celebrating the capture of WBO’s empty liver weight title last Saturday night with its decision victory over Jorge Garcia at Garden Madison Square Theater in New York City.

Xander will not be the next Miguel Cotto or Felix Trinidad for Puerto Rico. He does not have the talent to be like those fighters. It’s not like Hector Camacho either. His style is like one Shakur Stevenson, but not skilled, but with the same risk-risk, hit-in-tao method.
The performance by Xander, 22, was not enough to say that he would have the opportunity to beat fighters such as Sebastian Fundora, Bakhram Murtazaliev, Vergil Ortiz Jr., Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, or Yoenis Tellez. Bob Arum’s top rank champion must be well aware of how little Shot Zayas would have against any of them.
That could be why when asked about Xander’s next battle, he didn’t name anyone. He only said he would defend a WBO belt in Puerto Rico for his next battle later this year.
Zayas did a good job beating Jorge Garcia through a unanimous 12 -round decision. He used a move, a ton of holding, and a strong injection to win by the scores 116-112, 118-110, and 119-109.
Zayas defensive style
The clinching and steady movement worked well on the pressure fighter, Garcia, but would not be effective against any of the talented fighters in the department. They would walk Xander down, fight by tie it, and put it into pieces.
If Turki Alalshikh took an interest in using Zayas for one of his events, it would be worth fighting one of the champions in 154. Turki would have to be open to welcome another Jerry-esque Type a fighter in his fold.
If not, Xander would better fight easily like those on which he built his unbeaten record. The Top Rank formula has worked well, turning a fighter at Finesse level without any power into the world champion without fighting against any of the dangerous men in the department.
