Legend continues: Sugar Ray Leonard’s 69

Former five-division world champion Sugar Ray Leonard showed his rapid speed this week in Mitt’s exercise. In a video clip, the ‘Sugar Ray, 69, worked in what seems to be on the balcony of his beautiful mega-million mansion in the rich Pacific Palisades, California.

Leonard’s timeless hand speed

Leonard, winner of the 1976 Olympic Gold Medal (36-3-1, 25 ko) does not look like he had lost much of his speed since retiring in 1982 due to an eye injury. In fact, even to a fighter in their 20s, it would be striking to have the speed that Sugar Ray is displaying in this week’s video clip. It is uncommon to see a leonard age fighter still possessing a hand speed and looking athletic the way it does.

Leonard is regarded as the gold standard for what welterweights should aim to be. Neither has yet matched the combination of speed, power and boxing capacity in which a sugar ray was in possession. Although some have come along since his retirement, fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Terence Crawford, and Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis have been short of the general talent that Leonard had.

A glimpse of boxing royalty

If Sugar Ray had fought during this age, it is unreal how much money he would have made, and his achievements. It would have been interesting to see what he could have done fighting like Canelo Alvarez, Genadiy Golovkin, Crawford, Boots Ennis, and Dmitry Bivol.

When Leonard was fighting, boxing was still shown on large network TV stations like ABC, CBS, and NBC. Near the end of Sugar Ray’s career, his main fighting was shown on the main cable, HBO and Showtime platforms. Leonard’s recipient against Tommy Hearns was shown in 1989 on HBO PPV.
