On Sunday, Russia started commercial flights to North Korea, in another mark on the presence of closer relations with its Asian ally, whose attack in Ukraine is helping.

The first flight in Moscow-Pyongyang, run by the Russian Nordound Airlines, took off in 1625 GMT, according to the Cherymityvo Airport website.

It is scheduled to land in the North Korean capital after about eight hours.

But at first, the road will not be served only once a month, according to the Ministry of Transport in Russia.

Nordwind airlines – which were transporting the Russians to holiday destinations in Europe before the European Union imposed a ban on Russian flights – at a price of 45,000 rubles ($ 570).

“This is a historical event, which strengthens relations between our countries,” said Olig, an employee in Nordond, who runs the journey and who did not want to give his full name, to Agence France -Presse at the airport.

He also refused to specify the number of passengers on board.

“For the first time in more than 70 years of diplomatic relations, we launch direct trips between the capitals of our countries,” Russian Deputy Transport Minister Vladimir Potkkin said by the ministry’s telegram account.

Russian government news agency TASS said that the first return trip from Pyongyang to Moscow will be held on Tuesday.

Russia and North Korea regained the train links on June 17 after their suspension in 2020 during the Covid’s pandemic.

The two countries were affected by more closer military narratives in recent years, as Pyongyang supplied forces and weapons for Russian military operations in Ukraine.

They signed a mutual defensive agreement last year, when Russian President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea.

North Korea confirmed for the first time in April that it had deployed a group of its soldiers on the front lines in Ukraine, along with the Russian forces.
